Christmas in the Capital: Valletta’s Christmas lights

Valletta is the best place to feel the Christmas atmosphere in Malta. During Christmas in the Capital 2026, the city is decorated from 25 November to 31 December. Walk from City Gate down Republic Street to St George’s Square and Castille Square, where you’ll find the big Christmas trees and light displays. It’s free, and it looks best after dark.

Tip: the evenings are the busiest, especially at weekends. For quieter photos, go on a weekday evening, then have dinner or a hot drink in one of the side streets.

Christmas markets in Malta 2026

Malta’s Christmas markets are smaller than the famous ones in Germany or Austria, but they have their own charm: local crafts, Maltese sweets, mulled wine, live music and lots for children. These markets have confirmed dates for 2026:

Natalis Notabilis, Rabat (4 to 13 December)

One of Malta’s biggest Christmas events. The historic streets of Rabat, next to Mdina, fill with stalls, food, cribs and entertainment. It gets very busy at weekends, so look out for Park & Ride details closer to the date.

Woodland Christmas Market, Ta’ Qali (4 to 13 December)

Held at the Oak Tree Circle in Ta’ Qali National Park, this is a free, family-friendly market with eco-friendly gifts, local artisans, food, live music and free activities for children.

Winter Wonderland Gozo (27 to 29 November)

The 10th edition of Gozo’s Christmas fair kicks off the season on the sister island, with shopping, entertainment and support for local charities.

The presepju (Christmas crib)

Cribs are at the heart of Christmas in Malta, which is called Il-Milied in Maltese. Many families build their own, and parishes and local groups put on crib exhibitions, some with hundreds of hand-made figures in Maltese village scenes.

Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem, Gozo

A whole live Nativity village in the fields of Għajnsielem, close to the Mġarr ferry terminal, with costumed residents, crafts and animals. It opens on selected days in December and early January. The 2026 schedule is not out yet.

Midnight Mass and the child’s sermon

On Christmas Eve, parish churches across Malta and Gozo hold Midnight Mass. A special tradition is the Priedka tal-Milied, the Christmas sermon given by a young child. Times vary by parish, so check locally.

Christmas food

Look out for imbuljuta tal-qastan, a warm chestnut and cocoa drink served around Christmas, honey rings (qagħaq tal-għasel) and Christmas log cakes in every pastizzeria.

New Year’s Eve in Malta

The year ends with a free national New Year’s Eve party in St George’s Square, Valletta, on 31 December, from 22:00 to 02:00, with live music and fireworks at midnight. Gozo usually holds its own celebration in Independence Square, Victoria.

Weather in Malta at Christmas

Malta has one of the mildest winters in Europe. In December, expect daytime temperatures of around 16°C, cooler evenings and some rainy days. A light jacket or jumper is enough most of the time, but bring an umbrella.

Tips for Christmas in Malta

  • Public holidays: 8 December (Immaculate Conception), 13 December (Republic Day) and 25 December. Some shops close and buses run a reduced service.
  • Book ahead: hotels, restaurants and shows fill up quickly between 20 December and New Year.
  • Go to markets on weekdays: weekends are very busy, especially at Natalis Notabilis.
  • Use Park & Ride or ride-hailing apps: parking near the big events is limited.
